Ounila Valley, south of the High Atlas
Ait Ben Haddou
Ait Ben Haddou is a fortified earthen village on the ancient caravan route between Marrakech and the Sahara. Most residents moved to the modern village across the river, but some families still live within the ksar, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
- Location
- About 30 km from Ouarzazate
- Visit duration
- 1 to 2 hours, including the climb
- Path
- Uphill on dirt and irregular steps
- Best light
- Early morning and the last hour before sunset
Why visit Ait Ben Haddou
It shows how pre-Saharan earthen architecture worked defensively and socially: a granary at the top, tiered housing below, and a single main entrance.
Many southern kasbahs are isolated fortified houses. Ait Ben Haddou is a complete village surrounded by walls, which explains why it is preserved as a complete example.
We can include Ait Ben Haddou in one of our Morocco tours or prepare a custom trip with your dates and pace.
What to see and do
The climb to the agadir
The granary at the summit offers views over the Ounila Valley. Allow 20 to 30 minutes climbing slowly.
The river crossing
Usually dry or shallow, with stones to cross; after rain, a small alternative bridge is used.
The Ounila Valley road
The old route to Telouet, more scenic and slower than the main road.
How many days to stay
Most travelers stop for a couple of hours. Staying overnight allows you to see the village at sunrise and sunset without the daytime tour groups.
Best time to visit
Autumn to spring. The midday heat in summer is intense during the climb, which is very exposed to the sun.
Getting there and around
By road from Marrakech crossing the Tizi n'Tichka, about four hours, or 30 minutes from Ouarzazate.
On foot once the river is crossed; there is no vehicle access inside the ksar.
Travel times to nearby destinations
- Ouarzazate: About 30 minutes.
- Marrakech: About 4 hours crossing the pass.
- Dades Valley: About 2.5 hours to the east.
Practical tips
- Closed shoes make the climb much easier than sandals.
- Bring water; there is little shade on the way up.
- Photographers get the best color in the hour after sunrise.
Who is Ait Ben Haddou for?
Any traveler on the southern route; it is a natural stop rather than a destination in itself.
Common mistakes
- Arriving at midday in summer and giving up on the climb halfway.
- Spending only 20 minutes and only seeing the village from the parking lot.
