Rif Mountains, northern Morocco

Chefchaouen (Chaouen), Morocco

Chefchaouen—also known as Chaouen—is in northern Morocco, on a slope of the Rif Mountains at about 600 m altitude, about 4 hours from Fes and 2.5 hours from Tangier. Its medina is painted in blue tones that are periodically repainted, and it is small enough to cross on foot in half an hour, though not on flat ground.

Altitude
About 600 m
Typical stay
1 to 2 nights
Terrain
Steep alleys and steps throughout the medina
Nearby cities
Fes, about 4 hours; Tangier, about 2.5 hours

Why visit Chaouen

Visiting Chefchaouen makes sense for the contrast: after Fes or Marrakech, the pace slows down, the mountain air is fresher, and the scale is human. What makes the city special is not just the blue facades, but being an inhabited mountain town, with its spring, workshops, and square cafes, where a planless stroll is the plan.

What to see in Chefchaouen is solved by walking: the medina is small and slow-paced compared to Fes or Marrakech, and most visitors explore it without a guide. On a trip through Morocco, it usually works as an overnight between Fes and the northern coast, rather than a day trip.

We can include Chaouen in one of our Morocco tours or prepare a custom trip with your dates and pace.

What to see and do

  • Uta el-Hammam Square

The main square under the kasbah, with cafes and the old fortress museum.

  • The Spanish Mosque

A 30-minute climb east of town with the best view, especially near sunset.

  • Ras el-Maa

The spring at the top of the medina where locals still wash clothes.

  • Akchour

A valley about an hour away, with waterfalls and a natural bridge; a half-day or full-day hike.

How many days to stay

One night covers the town. Two nights allow for a hike in Akchour or the Talassemtane hills.

Best time to visit

April to June and September to October. Winter is cool and rainy; the blue streets are still striking even under clouds.

Getting there and around

By road only; there is no railway. Roads from Fes, Tangier, and Tetouan are winding in some sections.

On foot; the medina is closed to traffic and mostly stepped.

Travel times to nearby destinations

  • Fes: About 4 hours.
  • Tangier: About 2.5 hours.
  • Volubilis: About 3 hours.

How to include Chaouen in a Morocco route

In practice, Chefchaouen fits well into northern Morocco routes: as an overnight between Fes and Tangier or Tetouan, or as a stage within an Imperial Cities circuit that heads up to the Rif. When planning, it's best to count it as a full night rather than a passing stop, because the mountain road is traversed slowly.

You can see it within our Morocco tours, on the 7-day imperial cities circuit , or combined with Fes on a private route.

Chaouen: is it the same place?

Yes, Chefchaouen and Chaouen are the same place. Chefchaouen is the official name and Chaouen the short form used by both locals and many travelers; it is also known as 'the blue city.' If you search for information under either name, you are looking for the same Rif village.

Practical tips

  • Photographers should start early; the streets fill up by mid-morning in high season.
  • Ask before photographing locals and merchants.
  • Wear shoes with good grip: the steps are polished in some sections.

Who is Chaouen for?

Travelers looking for a slower, cooler stop between Fes and the northern coast.

Common mistakes

  • Treating it as a day trip from Fes: eight hours of driving for just a few hours in town.
  • Booking accommodation at the top of the medina with heavy luggage.

Chaouen: frequently asked questions

Is one night enough?

For the town itself, yes. Add a night if you want to do the Akchour hike.

Is it a good day trip from Fes?

Not really. The round trip takes about eight hours of driving. A stop with an overnight stay makes much more sense.
