Central Morocco, at the foot of the High Atlas
Marrakech
Marrakech is the main gateway to southern Morocco. Its walled medina, surrounding gardens, and the modern Gueliz district are about 90 minutes from the first passes of the High Atlas, so most desert and mountain itineraries begin here.
- Airport
- Marrakech Menara (RAK), about 15–20 minutes from the medina
- Typical stay
- 2–3 nights, more if you add day trips
- Altitude
- About 470 m
- Summer heat
- Frequently above 38°C (100°F) in July and August
Why visit Marrakech
It combines a dense, historic medina with easy access to very different landscapes: the Atlas in less than two hours, Essaouira and the Atlantic in about three, and the pre-Sahara in a day's travel.
Unlike Fes, Marrakech grew as a commercial and imperial city oriented towards the south and the Sahara, not the Mediterranean world. This is reflected in the earthen architecture, ocher walls, and the mix of Amazigh and Arabic influence in the souks.
We can include Marrakech in one of our Morocco tours or prepare a custom trip with your dates and pace.
What to see and do
Jemaa el-Fna
The main square, quiet in the morning and very lively after sunset when food stalls are set up. Expect to pay performers if you photograph them.
The souks
Historically organized by guilds. Prices are negotiated at most artisan stalls; fixed-price cooperatives exist for those who prefer not to haggle.
Bahia Palace
A 19th-century palace with painted cedar ceilings and courtyards. It's best to go early to avoid groups.
Saadian Tombs
A compact site with excellent zellige work; the queue can be longer than the visit.
Majorelle Garden and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum
Timed entry booking is usually necessary; it's advisable to do so in advance during high season.
Menara and Agdal Gardens
Older gardens with traditional irrigation, useful for a quieter afternoon.
How many days to stay
Two full days allow you to see the main points of the medina at a good pace. A third day allows for adding the Atlas foothills, the Ourika Valley, or a leisurely cooking class.
Best time to visit
March to May and October to November. Winter days are mild and sunny, but nights are cool. July and August are so hot that most visits should be made before 11:00 or after 17:00.
Getting there and around
Direct flights from most major European airports land at Menara. Trains connect with Casablanca and Rabat in about three to four hours; there is no rail line to the south or east of Marrakech.
The medina is explored on foot, not by vehicle: cars cannot reach most riads, so expect a walk with luggage from the nearest access point. Small taxis (petits taxis) serve the city; agree on the fare or ask for the meter.
Travel times to nearby destinations
- Essaouira: About 3 hours by road through the argan plateau.
- Ait Ben Haddou: About 4 hours crossing the Tizi n'Tichka pass.
- Merzouga: A full day of driving; almost always split into two days.
- Casablanca: About 3 hours by road or train.
Practical tips
- Save your riad's location offline; medina addresses are hard to find without it.
- Carry small bills: many stalls and taxis cannot change large notes.
- Friday afternoons are usually quieter, as many businesses close for prayer.
- During Ramadan, daytime cafes may be closed and the square comes alive mainly after sunset.
Who is Marrakech for?
First-time travelers to Morocco, short breaks, and those using the city as a base to explore the south.
Common mistakes
- Booking a riad deep in the medina with an early flight and no luggage transfer plan.
- Trying to combine Marrakech and the desert in two nights.
- Underestimating the summer heat when planning midday visits.
Marrakech: frequently asked questions
Are two nights in Marrakech enough?
For the medina essentials, yes. It's not enough if you also want a day trip to the Atlas or the coast.
Can you reach the Sahara on a day trip?
No. The Merzouga dunes are almost a full day's drive each way. The shortest realistic desert trip lasts three days.
Is Marrakech suitable for families?
Yes, with some planning. The crowds and heat of the medina are the main drawbacks; the gardens, Atlas foothills, and pool time help break up the day.
