Overview

This is the most direct way to reach the dunes of Erg Chebbi from Marrakech in 3 days and return by road. The route crosses the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, follows the kasbah route through Ouarzazate and the Dades Valley, and reaches Merzouga on the second afternoon.

It's an itinerary built around the road. Two of the three days involve long stretches in the vehicle, and the third day is almost entirely the return to Marrakech. If your priority is watching the landscape change from mountains to pre-Sahara to dune field, this route delivers exactly that. If you'd rather have calmer mornings, the four- or five-day version is a better fit.

Who this trip suits

Travellers with a short stay in Marrakech who still want to sleep in the Sahara, and who don't mind spending several hours in the vehicle on consecutive days.

Highlights

  • The crossing of the Tizi n'Tichka pass, the main road link between Marrakech and the south
  • Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified earthen village on the old caravan route to the Sahara
  • The Dades Valley, with its rock formations and terraced fields between kasbahs
  • The Todra Gorge, where the road runs between limestone walls several hundred metres high
  • A night at a desert camp in the Erg Chebbi dune field, near Merzouga

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1 — Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka → Ait Ben Haddou → Dades Valley

Early departure from your accommodation in Marrakech. The road climbs steadily through the High Atlas and crosses the Tizi n'Tichka pass, with stops at viewpoints along the way. After the pass, the landscape opens up and dries out, and a side road leads to Ait Ben Haddou, where you can walk up through the old village. Lunch is usually taken here or in Ouarzazate. In the afternoon the route continues east through the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs to the Dades Valley, where you spend the night.

This is the longest day of mountain driving. Passengers prone to motion sickness should sit in the front and take precautions before the pass.

  2. Day 2 — Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Erfoud Area → Merzouga

A shorter start through the Dades Gorges, then east to the Todra Gorge for a walk along the riverbed between the cliffs. The route continues through Tinghir and the palm groves of the Ziz region towards Erfoud and Rissani. You reach the edge of the dunes in the late afternoon, in time to continue on to Erg Chebbi by camel or 4x4 to the camp, and to enjoy sunset over the dunes.

Temperatures drop after sunset. In winter, desert nights can get quite cold; in summer they tend to be considerably milder. Bring a warm layer if travelling during the cooler months.

  3. Day 3 — Merzouga → Ouarzazate → Tizi n'Tichka → Marrakech

Sunrise over the dunes, breakfast at the camp and the return journey. The road retraces the southern route through Rissani, Tinghir and Ouarzazate before the final climb back over the High Atlas. Arrival in Marrakech is usually in the late afternoon or evening.

This is a full driving day with only short stops. If you're flying out that day, avoid booking a flight the same evening.

Frequently asked questions

Is three days enough to go from Marrakech to Merzouga?

It's enough to reach the dunes, spend a night in the desert and return, but it's a road-heavy itinerary. Days one and three are dominated by driving. Travellers who prefer a slower pace, or who want to add the Ziz Valley or an extra morning in the desert, usually prefer the four-day version.

How much time is spent driving?

Days one and three involve long stretches on the road, with a lighter middle day that includes more stops. Exact times vary depending on roadworks, weather and how long each stop lasts, so we confirm realistic timings when planning your departure.

Is this a private tour?

Yes, in its private version the vehicle and driver are for your group only, and stops can be adjusted along the way.

Can the tour end in Fez instead of Marrakech?

Yes. Ending in Fez removes the long return over the Atlas and turns the trip into a one-way route. Tell us your onward plans and we'll quote it that way.

Is it suitable for children?

It works well with children who are comfortable travelling by car. For younger children, we usually suggest adding a day so that no stretch feels too long.
