Southeast Morocco, at the edge of Erg Chebbi

Merzouga

Merzouga is a small village on the western edge of Erg Chebbi, an extensive field of high dunes. It is one of the most accessible large dune areas in Morocco and the usual overnight spot for Sahara itineraries.

Why visit Merzouga

It is the point where the road journey through southern Morocco leads into the open sand. The scale of Erg Chebbi is genuinely different from the smaller dune areas near the main roads.

Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga are not interchangeable names. Erg Chebbi lies beside Merzouga and the paved road reaches the village; Erg Chigaga is in another part of the south near Zagora and requires a different approach. Choose according to the whole route, not a claim that one desert is better.

We can include Merzouga in one of our Morocco tours or prepare a custom trip with your dates and pace.

What to see and do

  • Sunrise and sunset in Erg Chebbi

The light changes fastest just before and after. Climbing a dune takes longer than it looks; allow plenty of time.

  • Khamlia

A village south of Merzouga known for Gnawa music, with sub-Saharan roots.

  • Dayet Srji

A seasonal lake bed west of the village that holds water after rains and sometimes attracts flamingos.

  • Rissani

A market town with a large souk on fixed days and the historical site of Sijilmasa nearby.

How many days to stay

One night is enough to see the sunset, the starry sky, and the sunrise. A second night makes sense if you prefer a leisurely desert day instead of traveling on immediately.

Best time to visit

October to April. Spring and autumn offer warm days and cool nights. Winter nights near the dunes can be very cold, and the wind accentuates the cold. Summer is too hot for most travelers.

Getting there and around

By road from Marrakech via Ouarzazate and Dades, or from Fes via Midelt and the Ziz Valley; both are long routes. Errachidia has a small airport with domestic connections.

Camps in the dune field are reached by camel or 4x4 from the road; distances vary by camp. Conventional vehicles cannot drive on the sand.

Travel times to nearby destinations

  • Fes: A long day of driving through the Ziz Valley.
  • Marrakech: A full day; usually split in Dades or Ouarzazate.
  • Todra Gorge: Approximately half a day to the west.

Sleep in the Merzouga Desert

If you want to spend the night near the Erg Chebbi dunes, our family runs Merzouga Glamping, a camp located in the Merzouga area. You can check the accommodation and the desert experience on their website.

Practical tips

  • Take only a small overnight bag to the camp; the rest of the luggage stays in the vehicle.
  • Sand gets into everything: it's worth bringing a scarf and a hermetic bag for camera equipment.
  • Charging points in camps are often limited; bring a portable power bank.
  • Ask about bathroom facilities before choosing a camp category, as they vary greatly.

Who is Merzouga for?

Travelers who want a clear night in the desert as part of a broader Morocco route.

Common mistakes

  • Booking a 'desert tour' that stays in Zagora and expecting to find the Erg Chebbi dunes.
  • Arriving at night and missing the only sunset of the trip.
  • Not bringing any warm clothing after a hot afternoon.

Merzouga: frequently asked questions

Is the camel trek mandatory?

No. You can access the camp by 4x4, and shorter camel rides can also be arranged if preferred.

How cold does it get at night?

In December and January, nights near the dunes can drop to a few degrees above zero. Camps provide thick blankets, but it's advisable to bring a warm layer.

Is there mobile coverage?

There is usually some coverage near the village, more irregular in the dune field. Many camps offer limited Wi-Fi.
