Overview

This is the most efficient way to connect Fez and Marrakech without repeating the same road. Every day covers new ground: the Middle Atlas and the Ziz Valley heading south, the dunes at the midpoint, and the gorges, kasbah valleys and High Atlas heading west.

Being one-way, it fits well between city stays at each end — for example, three nights in Fez, this route, and then Marrakech.

Who this trip suits

Travellers moving between Fez and Marrakech who want to include the desert rather than retracing their steps.

Highlights

  • No repeated stretches of road
  • The Ziz Valley heading south, the Dades and the Todra on the way back west
  • A night at a Sahara desert camp, in Erg Chebbi
  • Ait Ben Haddou before the final Atlas crossing

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1 — Fez → Ifrane → Azrou → Midelt → Ziz Valley → Merzouga

The northern approach through the Middle Atlas and the Ziz corridor, reaching the dunes for sunset and a night at the camp.

  2. Day 2 — Merzouga → Rissani → Todra Gorge → Dades Valley

A morning in the desert, then west along the Ziz and Todra roads. A walk through the Todra Gorge before continuing to the Dades Valley for the night.

  3. Day 3 — Dades Valley → Skoura → Ouarzazate → Ait Ben Haddou

The Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs through the Skoura palm grove and Ouarzazate, arriving in Ait Ben Haddou with time to walk through the village in the softer afternoon light.

  4. Day 4 — Ait Ben Haddou → Tizi n'Tichka → Marrakech
