Private Transfer from Marrakech to Merzouga

Route facts

  • Distance: approximately 560 km via Ouarzazate, Tinghir and Erfoud
  • Driving time: a full day of driving; most travellers split it over two days
  • Price: on request

Route description

This is the main road corridor between Marrakech and the Erg Chebbi dunes. It crosses the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, descends into the pre-Sahara at Ouarzazate, and follows the Dades and Todra valleys eastward before the final stretch to the edge of the dunes.

Optional stops along the way

  • Viewpoints at the Tizi n'Tichka pass
  • Ait Ben Haddou
  • Todra Gorge
  • Erfoud and Rissani on the approach to the dunes

Practical information

  • Done in a single day, this is a long transfer with only brief stops; we recommend an overnight stay in the Dades valley or in Ouarzazate
  • The mountain sections have many bends: sit in the front if you're prone to motion sickness
  • Winter snow can occasionally affect the pass; we adjust departure times accordingly
  • Desert camps within the dune field are reached by camel or by 4x4, not by the road vehicle

The vehicle type and passenger capacity are confirmed when we send your quote, based on the number of travellers and luggage.

Marrakech — Merzouga: frequently asked questions

Is it realistic to do it in a single day?

It's possible, but you'll arrive tired and see the route mostly through the window. Most travellers prefer the two-day version, which costs little more and includes the main stops.

Do you drop us off at our desert camp?

We drop you at the camp's meeting point at the edge of the dunes, from where the camp itself organises the transfer onto the sand.
